The Rev. Dr. Ruth E. Hamilton, pastor of St. Luke Lutheran
Church, Atlanta, and synod secretary, has been invited to serve as recording
secretary for Round XII of the U.S. Lutheran-Catholic Dialogue. The invitation was extended by the co-chairs
of the dialogue, the Most Reverend Lee A. Piché, auxiliary bishop of the
Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis, and the Rev. Lowell G. Almen, former
secretary of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. Round XII of the dialogue, “Faithful Teaching,” examines the
ministries of teaching within the Catholic and Lutheran churches through (1)
study of official statements and documents as well as the findings of previous
dialogues regarding the respective practices of the churches for such
ministries; (2) exploration of the sources, structures, and patterns for
discerning the truth coming to us in God’s Word and communicating this truth in
normative teaching for today; and (3) assessment of the dialogue’s conclusions
regarding the ministries of teaching for long-term ecumenical relationships. The dialogue meets twice a year to worship together, listen
to and discuss papers and case studies on particular issues within the topic,
determine further issues for study, and ultimately prepare a report. The dialogue next meets October 9-12 in
Chicago.
