Southeastern Synod Youth and Young Adult Ministry

2019 LEADERSHIP CONVOCATION WRAP-UP

Here are some highlights from the 2019 Leadership Convocation:

  • Presenter, Rev. Dr. Sam Giere, Wartburg Theological Seminary, offered a series of presentations during which we explored the proclamation of Jesus Christ in such a time as this (Esther 4:14), by discerning 'the times,' considering the relationship of trust and truth, and engaging the prophetic nature of the gospel of Jesus Christ.  Many thanks to Dr. Giere for challenging us to proclaim the Gospel boldly, for such a time as this.
  • We engaged in a strategic visioning process with our bishop. There will be more information forthcoming about this and next steps soon.
  • We gathered each day for worship and centering ourselves around the word proclaimed and the meal served.
  • We heard from Pr. Tiffany Chaney regarding updates on our Umoyo work in aiding our historically black churches in our synod to become vitalized in their mission and ministry.
  • Mr. Hilton Austin shared about advocacy work in the synod
  • Inspiritus leaders Mr. John Mueller and Deacon Michelle Angalet shared how we can be active in engaging the Georgia lawmakers regarding the current refugee assistance opportunities, with opportunities to come for our other states.
  • Mr. Jerry Weyrauch gave a passionate presentation on the work of the Suicide Prevention Task Force ministry.   Soon, each deanery will be given a pack of materials to use and distribute as needed.   For suicide prevention resources, check out our web page here:  https://www.elca-ses.org/suicide-prevention.  Mr. Weyrauch also presented the Fire and Ice award to Pr. Gary Soop for opening up dialogue about suicide prevention at St. Mark’s LC, Huntsville.  Good work, Pr. Soop!  ( “Fire and Ice” award - for someone whose life has been touched by suicide, and who has chosen to turn that event from the “frozen” state of hopelessness into the powerful “flame” of hope that inspires others to pursue suicide prevention in everyday life!)
  • At the Women in Ministry discussion, we shared an opportunity for women which will take place at the Sacred Heart Monastery in Cullman, Alabama.  During five eight-day sessions over two and a half years, the women will engage in theological, scriptural and experiential reflection in addition to simply having time to rest, renew, and experience community with other women ministers. The program is fully funded by the Lilly Foundation. Time for application is limited, so please act quickly:  https://atthewellsprings.org/

ALL TENNESSEE 2018

122 youth and adults met November 10 & 11 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hixson, Tennessee for All Tennessee.  During the event youth from across Tennessee gathered to learn more about the "GODISNOWHERE" theme by participating in different activities throughout Saturday afternoon.  Youth looked at where God was through an interactive Stations of the Cross activity, they also got to ask Pastor Ed Myers and Pastor Katherine Museus any question they wanted to ask, they learned about how we can be God's hands in the midst of disasters through the work of Lutheran Disaster Relief and put together hygiene kits for Lutheran World Relief.  To finish out their service that day they moved mulch on to the church's playground.  Worship started with a group of youth from Christ Kiswahili Lutheran Mission leading in song and during the confession participants were invited to take a piece of string to represent their confession and tie it on nails that formed "GODISNOWHERE" - a powerful way to see that God comes to us in the midst of our brokenness and as we communed together we saw God come once again in the body and blood of Christ. Special thanks to the volunteers of Trinity Lutheran Church for their hospitality and meals, as well as the ALL Tennessee planning team for their hard work putting it all together.
